CHARACTER
Character Name: Jacky M. Faber
Age: 20
Species: Human
Canon: The Bloody Jack series by LA Meyer
Canon Point: Midway through Wild Rover No More, conveniently enough right before she joined the circus in that book
Character Info: Here
Personality:
Jacky is an ultimately optimistic person. Once, while on transportation to Australia, she wrote a letter to her fiance and said that though she tried to be glum about it she couldn't help but see the bright side in it, already plotting and scheming to improve her life. Although she does suffer from PTSD due to the war (usually showing itself via chronic, screaming nightmares whenever she sleeps alone) and periodic periods of overwhelming depression (referred to by her as 'the black cloud'), that overwhelming optimism is honestly her true state of affairs.
She is a quick thinking former street rat, and frequently her need for financial stability can cause her to bite off more than she can chew. This is a frequent source of conflict in the books; some notable examples being stealing a prize ship from the British Admiralty (which resulted in her letter of Mark getting revoked and a price put on her head) and secreting away a nice little portion from a salvage operations that she worked to pay off said prize theft (which led to her being transported to Australia).
The 'mom' friend, she fusses over and cares for anyone she thinks needs it (her fellow ships boys, the baby she cared for while a child on the streets herself, her two wards Ravi Faber and Joan Nichols, etc). It is in all likelihood a combination of genuinely caring but also a facet of being in charge; she knows better than her friends what they need, and she'll make sure their lives fall in line or so help her. This, as you may imagine, does not always go over well.
Jacky considers herself, ultimately, to be a cowardly sort of pacifist; during most battles she is terrified that she is going to die, and it's all she can do sometimes to keep her knees locked and her face free of blubbering. A serial flirt, she thinks of herself as a good girl, 'mostly', and knows she's a bit odd for the time, but she figured a long time ago that there wasn't any point in not trying to live the best life you could. She knows what society expects of her, sometimes playing to those expectations, most times bucking them entirely.
Abilities:
Jacky is a normal human, albeit a quick thinking one. She's a good shot and a decent swordsman, but her skill lies more in manipulating events so she doesn't have to rely on those skills. She can also swim and dive, which is a rarity in her time, ride a horse, do scientific drafts, dance, scamper over rigging like a monkey, and so on and so forth. She also fair decent as a spy, due to her great skill at lying (ie acting) and thinking on her feet. Canonically speaking, although I'm technically pulling her from just before this point, she does work as a rope-walker while hiding in a circus, so like really.

CARNIVAL
Soul Colour: Yellow-Orange
Ideal Jobs: Either showman, talker, or both.
Relevant Experience:
Being a consummate showman herself, Jacky has frequently had to drum up her own business and keep customers entertained all over the world. She's a pretty decent Crier, and her acts are very vaudeville. She can sing, dance, play several instruments (violin, pennywhistle, squeezebox, guitar), act, and write plays of utter popcorn trash. She also learns well, and could very well have picked up some acrobatics in her near-year with the carnival (she learned a passable level of corps ballet in only a few months; nothing to sing home about, but she learned it).
Carnival History:
Jacky came in just before Wizard world, completely willingly. She's currently on the run due to (false) accusations of Treason, so she's hiding out until she hears that things have been resolved. (Of course, being a fairy carnival, the odds of her ever getting word from home is slim to none, but she doesn't know that) Her time in the carnival has so far been full of a lot of excitement and also much weirded out ness (utopia world was just wrong, but she absolutely loves her goggles she got in steampunk world), but it wasn't until the Vampire World that she got thrown, and got thrown badly. Perhaps one of her closer friends in the carnival died, perhaps they left, but either way Jacky found herself back on a battlefield with friends and crew dying around her. Just like Trafalgar, just like Jena. The Black Cloud came in, and came in hard. This was probably the only time she desperately wished to break her contract and go home.
The summerlands helped greatly to restore her equilibrium, and by the time they started pulling jobs at the Crossroads she was her cheery showman self again. Maybe with a few less smiles than she'd manage to gain over the past year, but still more than she came in with.

Existing Contract:
A year and a day contract due to sneaking into a show.
Details:
While trying to decide if the carnival was what she was looking for or not, Jacky snuck into one of the sideshows as is her wont. Unfortunately for her, she wasn't expecting to get nicked, but she's serving her year with good cheer. Her year is almost up, but knowing what she knows now about the boons voluntary service can bring, she's planning on sticking around.

Current Changes:
  • [COMMON] Patches of emeralds dotting her face and shoulders like freckles.
  • [COMMON] Slitted cats' eyes; if she got a cat's night vision to go with, she hasn't noticed.
  • [COMMON] Slightly elongated limbs, just enough to trigger an uncanny effect (and also enough so that she did have to relearn some fingerings and her marks during her acts).
  • [COMMON] Even more patches of emeralds, now on her belly (just missing her tattoo) and her thighs.
  • [UNCOMMON] Supernaturally flexible; she has used this new ability for much personal amusement and petty evil.

A DREAMER OF DREAMS AND A TRAVELLIN' MAN
Jacky loves her turn as a barker. Maybe not quite as much as her turn in the ring, or her times in the sideshows, but cheerfully calling to all and sundry to come see everything the circus has to offer, well, that just deeply calls to the showman in her.
"Step right up! Here for a lim-i-ted time only, the a-ma-zing death-defying devil, Ke-ru-bim!"
Catching your eye, she winks at you. Patron or co-worker, it doesn't matter; Jacky's happy, and she wants you to be, too.

I'VE LEARNED MUCH FROM BOTH OF THEIR STYLES
Today is a "vaudeville" day (Jacky is, truth be told, incredibly sad that she's missed vaudeville by almost a century; it definitely seems like her idea of a good time) rather than a big top day, but that doesn't lessen her performance one whit. Maybe she calls you up to be the straight man in her act, maybe you catch her between acts as she changes instruments and costumes, or maybe you've decided to help her clean up when it's all over. Either way, she flashes her foxy grin at you.

AND THE RUM IS FOR ALL YOUR GOOD VICES
Collapsing at one of the cookhouse tables, Jacky sets her tray down with an almighty clatter.
"Cor, I'm so bleeding bored!"
Turning to her nearest seatmates, she demands, "Are you bored? I'm bored!"
Turns out not even a fairy circus can keep one occupied all the time.

IN CHARACTER
Name: Jacky Faber.
Canon: The Bloody Jack Series.
Canon Point: Post-Canon; then spent five months aboard the Moira
Age: 20 21 (hit what would have been her birthday in January, relatively speaking).

History:
  A fairly concise history.

Aboard the Moira, Jacky settled into her job both in the Crow’s Nest and as a bartender-slash-entertainer at the bar (despite...really not being all that up and on with all the new-fangled space technology), making several friends aboard. She enjoyed her time off ship, although the downturns of the trips left her rather worn thin (notably, Caducus Primacy imploding and the Link’d In soulmate nonsense both threw her badly, albeit for different reasons), which sparked an appearance of The Black Cloud rolling in. That said, her mood had finally began to rise again, and despite being imprisoned and the whole to-do with the children, she was able to joke about their rotten luck. Before disappearing, she had reached the rank of Aureax.

Personality:
Despite all the hardships she’s encountered, Jacky is ultimately still a fairly optimistic person. She’ll often feel guilty over not being prostrate with grief while stuck in situations not of her choosing, but has come to the conclusion that it’s just her nature to enjoy herself in whatever small ways she can. That said, due to said hardships, she experiences periods of depression (which she refers to as ‘The Black Cloud rolling in’) and has fair to mild PTSD, which usually expresses itself in the form of chronic nightmares where she relives all her near death experiences and all the actual deaths she has witnessed. Both of these things can be lessened by the comfort of her friends, and she does not like to sleep alone.
She is very outgoing and makes friends easily, but not even her charms can win over everyone (and, in a different set of social mores, many of her tricks might not even work, playing on the preconceptions of the cultures and social mores of the early 19th century). Out-going, gregarious, and bright, Jacky is a consummate showman, always conscientious of giving the audience what it wants (she is also, not coincidentally, an excellent conman).
Fairly open-minded for her time, she is still a British girl from the turn of the 1800’s, and it takes a bit of nose rubbing to get her mental tracks to turn. Once they do, however, she is remarkably even minded, accepting that different people do things differently.
Having travelled to a good chunk of the ‘known world’, she isn’t all that fussed about travelling to new places with new people. Her sense of adventure has become a bit dinged over the past year; she claims to just want to stay on her friend Amy’s farm and never do anything to catch the eye of anyone again, but realistically, she is meant for adventure, and a sedentary life does not appeal. Also, as the Head and CEO of Faber Shipping (Worldwide) and the benefactor of the London Home for Little Wanderers, she needs to be out optimising her money making for all those who depend on her for their livelihoods (although, all things being even, much of her desire for money comes from her years on the street, which she acknowledges but still like many other people she prefers to think of her more altruistic reasons than her negative).
Despite being in many battles and altercations, Jacky still considers herself to be a rather cowardly sort. She has a healthy and strong sense of fear and her own mortality, and being inside her own head knows that she’s not very brave, even if others tote her as so. Notably, while running messages with a group of ‘Clod-Hoppers’ in Napoleon's army, she was captured by the Prussian’s and was lined up to be executed as a spy. She tried to put on a brave face (the ‘Primm’ face), but she couldn’t stop herself from crying and her knees from shaking and nearly lost her water; the men, who swooped in to her rescue, thought that she was a perfect patriot, strong and silent in the face of death for ‘his’ country (and of course, that’s the version that gets around).

Abilities/Skills:
Having been a sailor for roughly half her life now, Jacky is very good at not only sailing but its various parts. She is agile and quick and has impeccable balance from running about in the rigging and on the wet decks, she knows how to navigate across seas she has never been as long as she has a halfway decent seachart, and she knows how to get her bearings from the sun and the stars. She is also excellent at various projectile weapons, from handheld pistols to rifles, and small grape-shots to ship-killer canons. She can calculate aim in her head based on previous experience and adjust accordingly.
Her other skills are more human in nature. Having been a spy (and, in fact, being recruited for these very skills), Jacky is very good at pretending to be other people. She knows five languages conversationally, and knows words and phrases in two others, all picked up within seven years. She is good at presenting as both a man and a woman, albeit in the more narrow viewpoints of the 19th century. She is also incredibly skilled at multiple instruments (the violin/fiddle, the flagolet, the accordion/squeezebox, and the guitar being the ones she uses most) and at singing and dancing; her usual way of making money in strange lands is by putting on musical acts.
Ultimately, what might be her greatest skill is her ability to land on her feet. Multiple times over the last eight years she has found herself alone without friends or any of her things and has always managed to keep her head and escape, if not rise to the top of the situation.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Strengths:
  • Clever and good at thinking on her feet, Jacky is good at spur of the moment battle plans and also laying out deceptively simple traps and tricks to deal with others too big or important to fight one on one.

  • Being both a street urchin and a ship’s boy on a Royal Navy ship, she’s both scrappy and agile. She prides herself on being able to scale anything.

  • She picks up skills very quickly, especially with any sort of decent teaching (languages, mathematics, horseback riding, shooting, swordfights, etc...).

  • Very good at making friends.

  • Is an excellent sailor.

Weaknesses:
  • Small and chronically underfed, she doesn’t have a lot of baseline strength. In a one on one fight with someone taller and heavier than her that she can’t outwit or trap, she will most likely lose.

  • Her greed and faith in her own abilities can and do often land her in hot water. Roughly a third of all the shitty situations she’s gotten into have been due to her own actions.

  • Comes from the 19th century and while fairly enlightened and adaptive for her time, she has no real exposure with current technology, let alone future space technology.

  • Tends to over rely on her charms, and is always taken aback when people DON’T like her.

  • Also tends to over-conflate the ideas of beauty with goodness, and has made several poor choices because of this.

Items: was wearing her ι uniform with her shiv up one sleeve and her pennywhistle up the other.

[The video cuts in rather abruptly, showing first a counter then half of a woman’s face and a wall of bottles. It’s Jacky, at the bar. After a moment, she adjusts the camera head-on and flashes her foxy grin.]
Allo, mates! Long time no see, it seems. As you might’ve been able to guess, I’m pulling shift down at the bar, and I’m perishingly bored. If’n you want to catch up, or at the very least provide a poor working lass some entertainment (seriously, did everyone become temperate while I was gone?), please, come on down! I promise libations, good conversation, and good music if you do!
[A frown.] Also, if anybody knows where my concertina ended up, I’d be much obliged to see it’s return.
[She beams at the camera, and cocks a salute.] Jacky Faber, out!

Items: Her sailing togs (short buckskin skirt, loose canvas shirt), her shiv in one arm sheath, her pennywhistle in the other, a money belt containing some petty cash, and a seabag containing the following:

  • small water color set,

  • a school dress,

  • her Royal Navy lieutenant coat (complete with Trafalgar medal and Napoleon Medal of Honor),

  • her white lieutenant pants,

  • her blue lieutenant skirt,

  • two one pistols,

  • her sword Esprit (a cut to size French saber),

  • her violin ‘The Lady Gay’,

  • her Captain’s Log/Journal (half-filled),

  • and a locket containing small portraits of her Jaimy and her ward Ravi.

Prose Sample

(Note: This sample was taken from the Test Drive Meme and was expanded to fit the length requirement)

Um... [Swallowing, she tried to work out her sticky mouth. Whatever this creamy nut spread was, it was making her tongue stick. Not very pleasant, but she's had worse that didn't taste near as good; even if the nut bit was gooey, the jam was sweeter than any she'd ever had. This future was cursed strange, but she couldn't argue with the grub!]

[Turning back to the question at hand, Jacky ran a tongue over her tusks before answering.]
No, I think it's after my time... I've had peanut sauces in the Orient, and they were cursed good, but nothing like this. Jemimah Moses--our cook--she'd cook us hot peanuts on the stove, but they weren't near as sweet as this!

[Or as thick. Honestly, she weren't sure how this dog-man was able to eat it without any trouble. Then again, hadn't he mentioned something about... Sliding her eyes about, she spotted a glass of frothy white liquid and snagged it. Giving it a mighty sniff, she looked up at Red and beamed.] But this, this is of my time! My dear friend Amy, she owns a farm, and even my low-class neck has had fresh milk!

[Granted, she'd also had it at the school, but as always when she found herself so very far from home, she found herself thinking of Dovecote, of the simple days lying in the hayloft with Amy, talking of this and that--]

[Tilting her head back, she put all thoughts of home out of mind and slugged the liquid down....and immediately spat it back out.]
God's mangy teeth, why is it cold?!
